A previous pastor of mine was a huge history buff and when he was share parts of the bible in our studies he would also share the history behind things that are not very relevant to today's mindset. There are things that make much more sense if you know the history of why people did things. The arrangement of marriage by the fathers is a very interesting thing to study because it is unlike the falling in love and the woman says yes to the man. It wasn't like that at all.

When the bible talks about the land of milk and honey...it wasn't referring to cow's milk and bee's honey :)
